History of the Winetavern „Zur Sonne“
This house was build in the early years of the 14th century as one of several bathhouses in this street.
It stands deprecatory on the old wall that encloses the old town of Bingen. In the backyard you can find older stones of this wall.
Those bathhouses has been a lot of fun for all and in the pools there has been place for man and woman, what wasn’t normal in these early days.
They all drink and eat in these pools –and sometimes they had have a lot of fun. The musician played on harps and sang but all in all, the church wouldn’t allow it and said it was one big place of sin.
With the upcoming of diseases a lot of these bathhouses had have to close and got a new acception.
So in the years between 1760 and 1780 as this house has been getting a arche basement in that the wine was stored.
Well known persons as f.e. Adam von Itzstein, Hecker, Blum and Hoffmann von Fallersleben, all liberals have been seen often in Bingen, mostly in the hotel “Wei�es Ro�”
In the years between 1875 and 1921 this house was named as the “Wacht am Rhein”.
In these years the wood boarding in the wine tavern and in the floor has been build.
The bar has been build in 1890.
During the 1st and 2nd world war, the house was well known as the “Wacht am Rhein”and has been took over in the 2nd world war from the french as an military base.
In this time a lot of precious things in this house has been getting demaged.
With the new owner of this tavern, Mr. Constantin Daub, in the year of 1956 there have been made a lot of restorations to bring back the old glory of this house.
Did this tavern had have several guests rooms in the earlier time, with the end of the 20th century all rooms have been used of the families Daub and Kurth.
Nowadays you’ll find almost the well restored wooden boarding, the bar and a lot of typical things that you normally had have in the 18th and 19th century.
